Crazy! Missouri Mother Faces Felony Charges After Abandoning Unresponsive Kids In Car At Crash Scene While Intoxicated

A 32-year-old Missouri woman, Courtney R. Brown, is facing multiple serious charges after allegedly causing a violent multi-vehicle crash while under the influence — and leaving the scene as her two young children lay gravely injured inside her car. The disturbing incident took place on the morning of May 12, and has sparked outrage across the community.

What Happened on Interstate 270

Authorities say Brown came to an abrupt stop in the middle of eastbound I-270 near Route 367, triggering a chain-reaction crash involving three other vehicles. A driver who collided with Brown’s car reportedly rushed to check on the passengers — and discovered a horrifying scene.

Inside Brown’s wrecked vehicle were her two children, ages 3 and 8, both unconscious, bleeding, and unrestrained in the front seat. According to police, the children were lying across the center console, severely injured and showing no signs of movement.

Brown Allegedly Walked Away From the Scene

Instead of staying with her children or cooperating with authorities, Brown allegedly walked away from the crash, ignoring police commands to return. She was found almost a mile away and appeared disoriented.

A Missouri State Trooper noted in his report that Brown had “watery and bloodshot eyes,” “slow, confused speech,” and a “relaxed demeanor,” all signs pointing to possible drug influence. She was detained shortly after and later hospitalized for evaluation before being moved to the St. Louis County Jail.

Children in Critical Condition

Emergency responders rushed both children to a nearby hospital, where they were placed on life support and intubated due to the severity of their injuries. As of now, they remain in critical condition, according to local news reports from KSDK and FOX 2.

Authorities say both children were not in proper car seats or seat belts, which likely contributed to the seriousness of their injuries.

Charges Filed Against Brown

Brown is now facing a long list of felony charges, including:

  • Two counts of DWI causing serious injury
  • Three counts of leaving the scene of an accident
  • Operating a vehicle without a valid license
  • Two counts of endangering the welfare of a child

She was booked and later released on a $100,000 bond, according to court records. Toxicology tests later confirmed the presence of cannabis and amphetamines in her system at the time of the crash.

What Happens Next

Brown is expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on June 2. The case has captured significant public attention, especially due to the tragic injuries suffered by the children and the seriousness of the charges.
