Dangerous Heat Wave to Hit Southeast Virginia Through Tuesday

Virginia Beach, VA – A dangerous heat wave is set to impact Southeast Virginia through at least Tuesday, with temperatures reaching near 93°F and heat index values exceeding 100°F.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the region, which includes Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and surrounding cities, urging residents to take heat precautions seriously.

Heat Advisory and Risk of Heat-Related Illnesses

According to the Wakefield office of the National Weather Service, maximum heat index values are expected to surpass 100°F starting Saturday and continue through Tuesday evening.

With light winds offering little relief, daytime highs will remain in the low to mid 90s, and evenings will only bring mild relief with temperatures in the upper 70s.

Residents should avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon heat, especially between noon and 4 p.m., and stay indoors whenever possible. Vulnerable groups, such as seniors and young children, are at increased risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Travel and Safety Tips

Drivers traveling on I-264 and Route 58 are advised to be cautious, as the heat can make roadways dangerous, especially during the peak heat of the day. Make sure your vehicle’s air conditioning is working and that you have enough water with you if you’re traveling.

Extended Weather Forecast

The sunny weather will continue through Tuesday, with no rain expected. The persistent dry heat will also add to the discomfort, so it’s essential to stay hydrated and find ways to stay cool.
