Dangerous Heat Wave to Impact Southeast Michigan This Weekend

Detroit, Michigan – An intense heat wave will grip southeast Michigan this weekend, with life-threatening heat index values soaring to as high as 105°F.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory from 2 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday, followed immediately by an Extreme Heat Watch through Tuesday.

Heat Advisory and Extreme Heat Watch

The worst conditions are expected on Sunday and Monday, with highs approaching 98°F and the heat index potentially reaching 105°F in urban centers such as Detroit, Flint, and Ann Arbor.

Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties will experience the most intense conditions due to dense development and reduced overnight cooling.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, seek refuge in air-conditioned areas, and check on vulnerable neighbors—especially seniors and children. It’s critical to never leave children or pets in vehicles, as interior temperatures can rise to dangerous levels within minutes.

Weekend Weather: Hot and Dry

While scattered storms may develop early Saturday, they are expected to clear by late morning. The rest of the weekend will be sunny, dry, and extremely hot, particularly along I-75, I-94, and US-23, where road surfaces could exceed 130°F due to the extreme heat.

Cooling Centers and Safety Tips

Cooling centers are being activated across major cities. To find a location near you, contact your county’s emergency management office. The authorities emphasize hydration, staying indoors during the hottest hours, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities.

Relief in Sight

Storms are expected to return Tuesday night, providing some relief from the intense heat. However, the heat risks will remain high through Tuesday.
