Millions of Americans received a $1,400 stimulus check under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 as financial support during the COVID-19 pandemic. The official deadline to claim this payment was April 15, 2025.
However, not everyone missed the opportunity. Some special groups of people still have time to file their 2021 tax return and claim the money.
If you didn’t receive the stimulus check and think you might still be eligible, here’s what you need to know.
What Was the $1,400 Stimulus Check?
As part of the 2021 pandemic relief efforts, the US government sent out $1,400 per person to help Americans recover from the economic impact of COVID-19. This was the third round of stimulus payments and was part of the American Rescue Plan.
To claim the payment, individuals had to file a 2021 tax return and apply for the Recovery Rebate Credit. While most Americans had until April 15, 2025, a few groups still qualify for an extension and can claim their money.
Who Can Still Claim the 2021 Stimulus Check in 2025?
1. Active Military in Combat Zones
Members of the US military who served in combat zones get automatic tax extensions. This extension lasts for 180 days after leaving the combat zone, plus the number of days they had left to file when they entered. If this period extends past April 15, 2025, they can still submit their 2021 return and claim the $1,400.

2. Residents of Disaster Areas
People living in areas declared federal disaster zones by the government also get extra time. Depending on the situation—like wildfires, hurricanes, or floods—the IRS may extend the deadline to October 15 or even November 2025.
This applies to some counties in states such as California, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Check if your area qualifies before filing.
3. American Citizens Living Abroad
US citizens living outside the country automatically get a two-month extension, taking their deadline to June 15, 2025. If they also requested an additional extension, it may stretch to October 15. As long as they file within this period, they can still claim the Recovery Rebate Credit.
