- Online through your my Social Security account
- In person by visiting your local Social Security office
Why the SSA Is Making This Change
This update is all about security and stopping fraud. The SSA wants to make sure that your benefits are going to you — and not someone pretending to be you.
While this is great for reducing scams and protecting your money, it can be tricky for some people, especially those who:
- Are not comfortable with technology
- Live in rural areas with poor internet access
- Have mobility issues or disabilities
- Are older and prefer human help over digital tools
