Texas – In a heartbreaking and horrifying case, J. Fancher, 37, and D. Campos, 20, are facing serious charges a year after the tragic death of their 4-month-old daughter in a Texas motel.
According to reports, the parents, who were struggling with drug addiction, allegedly placed their baby inside a dresser drawer so they could have “**alone time.”
The Discovery of the Infant’s Death
The incident occurred in May 2024, when the baby was found unresponsive in the dresser drawer where she had been allegedly placed to sleep. Authorities say the couple had been living at the motel for over a year before the baby’s death. The medical examiner later confirmed that the infant had died from suffocation.
Shocking details have emerged that reveal this wasn’t the first time the parents used the drawer as a makeshift crib. L. Simon, the baby’s maternal great-grandmother, shared with reporters that the parents had repeatedly put the baby in the drawer when they wanted some time alone. “They shut her in there when they wanted alone time,” Simon said.
Details of the Investigation
The investigation revealed even more disturbing facts. According to police reports, D. Campos allegedly told investigators that J. Fancher would sometimes seal the drawer with a towel to prevent the baby from kicking it open.
Fancher later claimed that he went to the store and returned to find the drawer shut. Campos, however, said she had been asleep and assumed the baby was with Fancher at the time of the incident. The parents were also caring for their 1-year-old son when the tragic event occurred.
After the baby’s death, a motel housekeeper reportedly took photos of the baby inside the dresser drawer and immediately informed the motel’s management.
The Arrests and Charges
On June 20, 2025, D. Campos was arrested and booked into county jail. The following day, J. Fancher was also apprehended and held in county jail. Both are facing severe charges related to the murder of their infant daughter.
In addition, M. Mork, Fancher’s current girlfriend, was arrested and charged with hindering apprehension after allegedly helping Fancher evade law enforcement.
Sheriff E. Gonzalez praised the law enforcement teams across multiple counties for their dedication to the case. “Thanks to them, we are closer to securing justice,” he said.
Outrage and Calls for Justice
The case has sparked outrage in the community, with many questioning why the parents weren’t charged earlier. L. Simon, the infant’s great-grandmother, expressed her frustration, stating, “They have been living their lives like nothing ever happened. They should’ve been charged with the drugs at the scene and held on those charges until the homicide charges were ready.”
Bond, Court Appearances, and Ongoing Legal Proceedings
Jail records show that Fancher’s bond was set at $850,000, while Campos’s bond is $300,000. Campos is scheduled to appear in court today.
