A popular brand of chocolate chip cookies has been recalled across the United States due to a serious health risk for people with nut allergies.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Colussi Cantuccini Chocolate Drops, sold by D. Coluccio & Sons, were recalled because the product contains almonds that were not mentioned on the label.
Why Were the Cookies Recalled?
The recall was initiated after the Italian manufacturer of the product issued a notice stating that almonds were present in the cookies but not listed in the ingredients.
The FDA explained that a temporary issue in the company’s production and packaging process led to the labeling mistake.
Product Details
The recalled cookies were sold in a 10.58 oz blue-colored bag and had the UPC code 8002590006020. Two batches have been identified in the recall:
- Lot number: 3540152 | Best before: 15-01-2025
- Lot number: L354150 | Best before: 29-05-2025
These products were distributed nationwide, both through retail stores and mail orders.
Health Risk: Why Almonds Are Dangerous for Some
Almonds are one of the top nine food allergens, as defined by the FASTER Act of 2021. Others in this group include eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, sesame, shellfish, soybeans, wheat, and tree nuts like walnuts and pecans.
For people with tree nut allergies, consuming products with undeclared almonds can cause mild to life-threatening reactions, including:
- Rash or itchy mouth
- Swelling of lips, tongue, or throat
- Stomach discomfort
- Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency. It can cause difficulty in breathing, a drop in blood pressure, dizziness, and even loss of consciousness.
What Should You Do?
The FDA has advised all consumers who purchased Colussi Cantuccini Chocolate Drops cookies to return the product to the store where they bought it for a full refund.
If you or anyone in your family is allergic to almonds, do not consume these cookies, even in small amounts.
The FDA also reminded people about the importance of proper food labeling, especially when it comes to allergens. Early detection of allergy symptoms and quick treatment with epinephrine (adrenaline) can help prevent serious complications.
