El Paso, Texas – If you thought the weather couldn’t get any more chaotic in West Texas, think again. A powerful windstorm is making its way through El Paso, and it’s bringing along dust, high temperatures, and serious fire danger. If you’re in the area, be prepared—things are about to get wild (and windy)!
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), wind gusts could reach up to 50 miles per hour, strong enough to move patio furniture, push your car, or even send trampolines flying down the street.
Weather Alerts in Place for El Paso
The NWS has issued several weather alerts that will be active from Monday, May 13, to Tuesday, May 14, 2025:
Wind Advisory:
- May 13 & 14, from 12 PM to 8 PM MDT
- Gusts could hit 50 MPH
Blowing Dust Advisory:
- May 13, from 1 PM to 8 PM MDT
- Reduced visibility due to dust and sand
Red Flag Warning:
- May 13 & 14, from 11 AM to 9 PM MDT
- High risk of wildfires due to dry and windy conditions
What to Expect
These strong winds will bring blowing sand and dust, making it hard to see while driving or walking outdoors. Loose items like trash cans, outdoor furniture, and garden tools can become dangerous projectiles. It’s best to tie them down or bring them inside.
Also, because the air is so dry, the chance of fires spreading quickly is high. That’s why the Red Flag Warning is in effect. Be extra careful with any flames, even small ones like candles or cigarettes.
It’s Not Just Wind—It’s Also Hot!
Along with the high winds, hot temperatures are also sweeping the area. El Paso is expected to reach a high of 95°F, and Las Cruces won’t be far behind at 92°F. It’s the perfect recipe for a dusty, dry, and uncomfortable day.
Stay Safe and Cool
- Drink plenty of water
- Stay indoors during peak wind hours (12 PM to 8 PM)
- Avoid using anything that could cause a spark
- Drive slowly if you encounter blowing dust
And for the love of your lips—maybe skip the lip gloss if you’re heading outdoors. You don’t want a mouthful of sand!
