Blacksburg, Virginia – A dangerous heat wave is hitting central and southern Virginia on Tuesday, June 25, with extreme heat warnings in place for many areas. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Blacksburg, apparent temperatures—also known as the heat index—could climb as high as 112°F in the hottest spots.
From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for cities including Lynchburg, Danville, and South Boston. The heat will feel even worse because of the high humidity, putting everyone at increased risk for heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Areas Under Heat Advisory
In other parts of Virginia, like Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Martinsville, a Heat Advisory has been issued. While these areas may not see the most extreme temperatures, they will still face heat index values between 104°F and 108°F, which can still be dangerous.
Hospitals in the region are warning people to stay hydrated, avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day, and check on elderly family members and neighbors. Those without air conditioning are especially at risk.
What Makes This Heat Dangerous
In Danville and surrounding Southside communities, the mix of heat and humidity will push heat indices to as high as 112°F. That level of heat can become dangerous quickly, especially for people working outdoors or without proper shelter.
Even though higher areas west of Interstate 77 may feel slightly cooler, relief will be minimal. There may be a stray thunderstorm in the mountains later in the afternoon, but no widespread rain is expected to break the heat.
The NWS is advising everyone to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and stay in air-conditioned places if possible.
Heat Alerts Stay Active Through Tuesday Evening
All heat warnings and advisories will stay in effect until Tuesday evening. If high temperatures and humidity continue, the weather service may extend or issue new alerts.
