Extreme Heat Warnings Issued for Northeast U.S. as Temperatures Soar

Tens of millions of Americans are facing extreme heat this week, with several regions, especially in the northeast, under heat warnings as temperatures climb.

Extreme Heat Warnings in Major Cities

Extreme heat warnings were issued for Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston, starting Sunday. These warnings are expected to peak as the heat intensifies for the second half of the weekend. Additionally, a heat watch has been issued for Washington, D.C. and Baltimore on Monday.

In New York City, Mayor Eric Adams announced that temperatures would rise into the high 90s on Sunday, with a peak of 100°F on Tuesday. He emphasized the life-threatening nature of the conditions, urging residents to take precautions.

Emergency Heat Plans Activated in NYC

Zachary Iscol, New York City’s Emergency Management Commissioner, announced that the city’s emergency heat plan would go into effect starting Sunday. The plan includes the opening of 248 cooling centers throughout the city to provide relief to residents.

Iscol advised people to limit outdoor physical activities and reduce electricity usage during peak hours, especially for non-essential appliances like washing machines.

Widespread Heat Impacting the Nation

In addition to the northeast, heat alerts have been issued across the country, from Colorado to Maine, affecting more than 150 million Americans. The Midwest will experience triple-digit heat index values, with temperatures in some areas feeling closer to 105-110°F.

The extreme heat is expected to continue as it expands eastward on Sunday, with temperatures reaching the 90s from the Great Lakes to southern New England. The humidity will intensify, making it feel even hotter.

High Heat to Continue in the Midwest and Northeast

Heat index values are expected to rise into the triple digits again across the Midwest on Sunday, especially in areas like Chicago. Parts of the Northeast could also experience feels-like temperatures in the upper 90s to near 100°F.

Relief in the Northern Plains

As the extreme heat shifts eastward, relief is expected to reach the northern Plains in the next 24 to 48 hours, bringing some respite from the sweltering conditions.
