A tragic accident occurred near Eura Airport in southwestern Finland on May 17, when two helicopters collided mid-air and crashed, killing all five people on board.
What Happened in the Crash?
According to Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the collision happened around 12:35 p.m. local time near the small town of Kauttua, close to Eura Airport. One helicopter had two people, and the other had three passengers. Sadly, there were no survivors.
The two helicopters were found about 300 feet apart in a wooded area after the crash. Emergency teams arrived quickly, but all passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.
Details About the Helicopters and Flight
Both helicopters were civilian Robinson R-44 models, registered outside Finland. They were flying from Tallinn, Estonia, to Piikajärvi Airport in Kokemäki, which is about 9 miles from Eura Airport.
Finnish and Estonian authorities are working closely to investigate the accident. The Finnish Safety Investigation Authority is also conducting its own inquiry.
What Are Investigators Focusing On?
Investigators are looking into the distance between the helicopters and their altitude at the time of collision. The wreckage has been sent to Turku city for detailed examination.
Autopsies will be carried out on the victims in Turku as well.
Victims and Investigation Status
Though Finnish officials have not confirmed names, Estonian media identified three of the victims as businessmen Oleg Sõnajalg and a couple named Priit and Lilit Jaagant.
Officials say it is too early to tell if the crash was caused by human error or a technical malfunction. The investigation may take nine months to a year to complete.
