Five States Are Sending Out Local Tax Refunds — Who Can Get Up to $500

Apart from federal tax refunds given by the IRS, many U.S. states are also giving back money to their residents. These refunds can go up to $500 and are meant for taxpayers who overpaid during the 2024 tax year.

If you live in one of the following states and filed your taxes correctly and on time, you might be eligible to receive some extra money.

Colorado Tax Refunds

In Colorado, the Department of Revenue is issuing refunds for people who paid more taxes than they needed to. There is no fixed amount because each refund depends on your personal income, deductions, and other tax details.

If you filed your 2024 tax return by the April 15, 2025 deadline, you are likely eligible. If you filed with an extension, check your refund status with the Colorado Revenue Department.

New Jersey Tax Refunds

New Jersey is offering refunds in two ways:

If you filed your taxes on time (before April 15 or October 15 with an extension) and you have a credit balance, you can get this refund. The exact amount depends on your income and eligibility.

California Tax Refunds

In California, refunds are being given based on two main credits:

Refund amounts vary based on your tax return. If you filed on time or were given extra time due to a natural disaster (until October 15, 2025), you may qualify.

Check your refund status with the California Franchise Tax Board.

North Carolina Tax Refunds

In North Carolina, the amount of refund depends on your:

  • Income
  • Deductions
  • Earned Income Credit (if eligible)

According to the state’s Department of Revenue, those who filed on time (whether online or by paper) and had a credit balance are eligible. Direct deposits take 3 to 6 weeks, and physical checks can take up to 12 weeks.

North Carolina had some delays due to printing issues, but as of May 2025, they expect to finish sending all refunds by October 2025.

Georgia One-Time Tax Refunds

Georgia is offering one-time refund checks, thanks to House Bill 112. These refunds started going out in June 2025. They were made possible due to strong budget control and a healthy state economy.

Here’s how much you can get:

  • $250 if you filed single or married separately
  • $375 if you are head of household
  • $500 if you filed married jointly

To qualify, you must have correctly filed your 2023 and 2024 tax returns and had a credit balance. Payments are being sent out over the next few weeks. Check the Georgia Department of Revenue website for updates.
