Flamethrower Attack at Boulder Demonstration Injures Six, FBI Calls It a Terrorist Act

A terrifying attack unfolded Sunday afternoon in Boulder, Colorado, when a suspect wielding a makeshift flamethrower and throwing Molotov cocktails targeted a peaceful demonstration in support of Israeli hostages. The FBI has classified the incident as a “targeted act of violence” and is investigating it as terrorism.

What Happened During the Attack?

At around 2 p.m. local time near Pearl Street in Boulder, a 45-year-old man allegedly used a homemade flamethrower and incendiary devices against the crowd while shouting “Free Palestine,” according to FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek.

Six people, aged between 67 and 88, were injured in the attack, including a Holocaust survivor. Victims suffered burn injuries, with conditions ranging from minor to critical. Witnesses described horrific scenes, with one telling Fox Denver, “Every victim had skin basically melted or hanging from their legs.”

Another witness recalled seeing a large flame and someone on fire during the attack, describing it as “a Molotov cocktail equivalent, a gas bomb in a glass jar.”

Suspect and Investigation Details

The suspect is an Egyptian national whose visa expired in March 2025. He arrived in the U.S. in August 2022 at Los Angeles International Airport. Despite overstaying his visa, sources say he was granted a work permit during the Biden administration. Authorities have ordered evacuations of several blocks near Pearl Street and are also investigating a vehicle of interest connected to the attack.

The FBI considers the assault a “targeted terror attack,” and local law enforcement is actively investigating. A senior White House official confirmed that the president has been briefed on the situation.

Political Reactions and Community Condemnation

Political leaders swiftly condemned the attack. Colorado Governor Jared Polis called it a “heinous act of terror,” emphasizing that “hate-filled acts of any kind are unacceptable.”

Democratic representatives, including Joe Neguse, and Senators John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet, expressed their prayers for the victims and denounced the violence.

Responses from Jewish and Advocacy Groups

The Boulder Jewish Community issued a heartfelt statement expressing sorrow over the attack during the “Run for Their Lives” walk, a weekly event to support hostages kidnapped in Gaza. They vowed to keep the community informed and sent prayers for those injured.

The Anti-Defamation League also responded, highlighting the attack on this Jewish community gathering and condemning the violence.

What Is Known About the Event?

The “Run for Their Lives” walk is a peaceful demonstration where Jewish community members run or walk to raise awareness for hostages still held in Gaza. The attack shocked attendees and the wider community.
