Evansville, Indiana – Heavy rain of more than 3 inches in just 90 minutes caused flash flooding in the Evansville area on Monday evening. Streets were quickly overwhelmed, and emergency officials had to conduct multiple water rescues across central Vanderburgh County.
Flash Flood Warning in Effect
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a flash flood warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. CDT for Evansville, Melody Hill, and Kasson. Officials report that Highway 57 near Evansville Airport is flooded, and many urban roadways across the metro area are submerged, including impassable underpasses.
Dangerous Situation for Drivers and Residents
This is considered a particularly dangerous situation, as thunderstorms continue to move through the region. Flash flooding is affecting low-lying areas, creeks, and streams, with the possibility of more rainfall worsening conditions.
Drivers are urged to avoid non-essential travel tonight and never attempt to cross flooded roads. Remember, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown”. Residents in flood-prone zones should move to higher ground immediately.
More Rain Expected
Heavy rain is expected to continue into the evening, and further alerts may be issued if conditions continue to worsen. Stay updated on weather alerts and flood warnings throughout the night.
