A North Dakota couple, Jamie and Raymond Johnson, have been arrested and charged with murder, child abuse, and domestic violence after the tragic death of their 3-year-old foster daughter, who had special needs.
According to authorities, the Johnsons subjected the child to months of physical abuse, including punches, kicks, head slamming, and hair-pulling, for seemingly minor “infractions” such as crying and taking too long to chew her food.
The Abuse Uncovered
The abuse reportedly began shortly after the girl was placed in the Johnsons’ care. Authorities stated that the child, believed to have autism, was regularly punished by the foster parents for behaviors like crying and eating too slowly.
Jamie Johnson, the foster mother, allegedly became enraged over the child’s eating habits, and one of the other foster children told investigators that the girl would be “in trouble” for “leaving food in her mouth.”
In text messages reviewed by police, Jamie Johnson expressed her frustration with the child, calling her a “total brat” and stating that she might not have taken the child in had she known how difficult she would be. The foster mother also referred to the girl as “special needs” and possibly “autistic,” according to the affidavit.
The Tragic Incident
In March, the Johnsons brought the unresponsive child to the hospital, claiming she had fallen down a flight of stairs. However, upon further investigation, it was revealed that the girl had been subjected to repeated abuse.
The foster mother had allegedly told investigators that the child would often “self-inflict” injuries due to her learning disability, but other foster children and home security footage painted a much darker picture of the home environment.
According to one of the foster children, Jamie Johnson was the “meanest one” of the couple and would often lash out at the 3-year-old.
Ring camera footage showed Jamie physically assaulting the girl, punching her in the head with a closed fist, yanking her around by her hair, and causing her to hit her head on various surfaces like the floor, a table, and a wall.
Other punishments included hitting the girl with a wooden spoon on the face, stomach, and head, and covering her mouth while she cried.
On one occasion, when the girl bit Jamie’s hand in resistance, she was allegedly punched repeatedly in response. The abuse was so severe that the child passed out and required revival with an ice pack, according to other foster children who witnessed the abuse.
Raymond Johnson’s Involvement
While Jamie Johnson was described as the more abusive of the two, her husband, Raymond Johnson, was also reportedly involved in the mistreatment of the 3-year-old. He was said to have kicked the child and hit her in the head when he disapproved of her behavior.
Legal Consequences
Jamie and Raymond Johnson now face multiple charges, including murder, child abuse, and domestic violence. They are scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on July 24, where they will face the consequences of their horrific actions.
