Gas Prices Rise in Central Texas as Summer Travel Heats Up

As the summer season begins, Central Texas drivers are noticing more than just rising temperatures. Gas prices are also climbing, just in time for the busy travel period around Memorial Day.

Gas Prices Climbing Across Central Texas

According to AAA, the average price for regular unleaded gasoline in Texas has reached $2.80 per gallon. In some parts of the state, prices are getting close to the $3 mark. In Central Texas, drivers are seeing prices range between $2.50 and $2.80, depending on the city and the gas station.

This rise marks the beginning of what experts call the “summer surge”—a yearly increase tied to seasonal travel and fuel changes.

Why Are Gas Prices Rising?

There are two main reasons for the higher prices:

More travel demand – As Texans get ready for road trips around Memorial Day, demand for fuel naturally goes up.
Summer-grade gasoline – Refineries must switch to a cleaner-burning fuel during the summer months. This summer-grade gas costs more to produce, and those added costs are passed on to consumers.

These are common reasons for fuel hikes this time of year and happen almost every May in Texas.

The Good News: It’s Still Cheaper Than Last Year

While gas prices have gone up, there is a silver lining. This time last year, prices were even higher. On average, drivers in Texas are currently paying about 40 cents less per gallon than they were in May 2024.

So although gas feels expensive now, it’s still more affordable compared to last summer.
