George Coulam, the founder and longtime leader of the Texas Renaissance Festival, passed away at the age of 87. Known to many as “King George,” he died on Wednesday morning at his home in Todd Mission, Texas. His death was confirmed by Grimes County Sheriff Donald G. Sowell, who stated that the case is currently under investigation.
Coulam, a well-known figure in the Renaissance fair community, was not only the founder of the popular annual festival but also served as Mayor of Todd Mission for several decades. His sudden death has left the local community and festival supporters in shock.
Housekeeper Finds Coulam Deceased at His Home
According to Houston Public Media, Coulam’s body was discovered by a housekeeper, who immediately notified authorities. The Todd Mission Police, along with the Texas Rangers and the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office, are now involved in the investigation.
Officials have clarified that there is no threat to the public, and at this stage, no cause of death has been confirmed.
A Death Surrounded by Tension and Legal Battles
The timing of George Coulam’s death has sparked speculation due to recent legal and political developments in his life. Just two weeks before his passing, a Grimes County judge ordered Coulam to sell the Texas Renaissance Festival and its associated assets. The decision came after a group of prospective buyers sued over a failed $60 million deal that fell through in 2023.
Adding to the stress, Coulam lost his mayoral seat for the first time since the 1980s during the May 3rd, 2025 elections. Many locals and supporters have expressed concern that the pressure from both legal and political losses may have played a role in his declining health. However, until the investigation is complete, this remains speculation.
