A fossil that had been buried for millions of years has finally been uncovered—and it’s a huge discovery!
A group of geology students from Sul Ross State University, led by professors Dr. Jesse Kelsch and Dr. Thomas Schiller, made the exciting find during a research trip in Big Bend National Park, Texas back in March 2025.
The students were in the park studying rock layers and formations when they stumbled upon a massive fossil. And it turned out to be a big deal—literally!
Texas Students Unearth Alamosaurus Fossil
According to Chron.com, the fossil belongs to an Alamosaurus, one of the largest land-dwelling animals ever known on the North American continent.
The Alamosaurus lived during the Cretaceous period, which lasted from about 145 million years ago to 66 million years ago. This massive dinosaur would have towered over its surroundings, making it one of the true giants of prehistoric Earth.
Big Bend National Park: A Hotspot for Dinosaur Fossils
Big Bend National Park is already famous for its dinosaur discoveries. Over the years, scientists have found:
- The bones of a giant pterosaur, the largest known flying creature, with a wingspan of about 36 feet.
- The massive skull of the Bravoceratops, a giant horned dinosaur known only from finds at Big Bend.
The discovery of the Alamosaurus fossil adds even more to the park’s legendary reputation as a treasure trove for dinosaur fossils.
Researchers believe that this newly uncovered Alamosaurus fossil could be one of the most complete skeletons ever found of its kind. If so, it could provide valuable new insights into how these giant creatures lived millions of years ago.
