According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, the Heat Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. CDT Friday for areas including southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, and western Kentucky.
Cities such as Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Paducah, and Evansville are experiencing the first prolonged stretch of heat and humidity this summer, which increases the risk of heat-related illnesses.

In southern Illinois, communities such as Mount Vernon and Metropolis are seeing afternoon heat index values exceed 100°F. The same intense heat extends south through Sikeston, Poplar Bluff, and New Madrid in Missouri. Emergency officials are urging residents to limit outdoor activities, especially during peak heat hours, and to hydrate frequently.

Health officials warn that the effects of heat stress will compound each day of exposure, making it critical to take necessary precautions. Individuals are advised to:
