Hillary Clinton Jokes About Bill and Obama Running Again If Trump Seeks Third Term

Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently made headlines with a humorous but serious-toned comment suggesting that Bill Clinton and Barack Obama could run for a third term—if Donald Trump attempts to do the same.

Speaking during a promotional interview for her latest book at New York’s 92nd Street Y, Clinton addressed the growing speculation over Trump possibly eyeing a third presidential term, which is currently not allowed under the U.S. Constitution.

Clinton’s Take: “Barack and Bill Could Run Too”

During her interview with Margaret Hoover, Clinton was asked about recent comments and hints from Trump about extending his time in office beyond two terms. Clinton said that Trump often signals his intentions early, even if they’re controversial.

She added, “When he says, ‘There are people who think that it could happen,’ what he’s really saying is that he has people exploring how to make it happen.”

Clinton further warned that Trump’s most loyal and militant supporters might still push for it, even if it goes against the law.

Then came her sarcastic but thought-provoking punchline:
“If this is where we’re heading—breaking the Constitution—then let’s give people a choice. Let Barack and Bill run too!”
The audience responded with laughter and applause.

Trump Denies Plans—But Still Hints at More

In a recent interview on Meet the Press, Trump said clearly, “I’m not looking to do it,” when asked about a possible third term. He added that the 22nd Amendment doesn’t allow it and that he only plans to be a president for eight years.

Still, his comments and public speeches often leave people guessing.

At a recent event at Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, Trump told a crowd:

“We won three elections. Some people want us to do a fourth.”

He added jokingly, “I’ll have to think about that.”

He also promoted his “Trump 2028” merchandise, joking that the idea drives “the left crazy.” Critics say that these comments may be meant to provoke reactions or keep supporters excited, even if a third term is not legally possible.

What the Constitution Says About Third Terms

According to the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, a president:

  • Cannot be elected more than twice
  • Cannot serve more than two years of someone else’s term and still run twice

This amendment was passed after Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected four times. Since then, it has become illegal for any U.S. president to serve more than two full terms.

So, whether it’s Trump, Obama, or Bill Clinton, none of them can legally run again for president.

Who Might Be Trump’s Successor?

While dismissing a third term for himself, Trump did mention possible successors:

  • Vice President JD Vance
  • Secretary of State Marco Rubio

Trump said several of his allies are capable and united, hinting that his choice for VP could naturally become the front-runner in future elections.
