Burkburnett, Texas, is set to become a hotspot for Hot Wheels enthusiasts as it prepares to house the world’s largest Hot Wheels collection. With more than 100,000 toy cars, the city plans to build a museum to showcase this impressive collection, drawing visitors from across the country.
A Collector’s Dream: The Story Behind the Massive Hot Wheels Collection
The collection was originally owned by 89-year-old Theophile Kwas, who spent decades accumulating Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Johnny Lightning, and other toy cars. Last April, the Burkburnett Development Corporation purchased the collection for $100,000 to preserve it and turn it into a local attraction.
For Kwas, this isn’t about personal recognition but about leaving a legacy for the town.
“This may bring this town to life, you know, where people will come and stop and visit and see what it’s all about. And that’s my legacy.” – Theophile Kwas
How the Collection Was Discovered
The collection was found by Travis Haggard, Executive Director of the Burkburnett Development Corporation.
“There are thousands of boxes full of Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Johnny Lightning—so many different brands. I was just shocked. I said, ‘How many do you have, Ted?’ and he said, ‘I think I have over 100,000.’ I knew we had to get this in the Guinness Book of World Records and build a museum.” – Travis Haggard
With this vision in mind, the city is now working to turn this collection into a must-see museum.
How the Hot Wheels Museum Will Help Burkburnett
City leaders believe the museum will be a game-changer for Burkburnett’s economy.
“It’s a huge win for Burkburnett. This will be a magnet to pull people in. If thousands of people visit the world’s largest ball of yarn, they will definitely come see the world’s biggest Hot Wheels collection.” – Assistant City Manager Dusty Burkybile
By attracting visitors, the museum is expected to boost local businesses, hotels, and tax revenue, helping to revitalize the town.
