The Families First Economic Support Pilot Program (FFESP) in Sacramento County, California is finally moving forward after experiencing multiple delays in payment distribution. This program aims to reduce economic inequality and support caregivers of young children by providing monthly financial assistance.
Originally set to launch in December 2024, the program was designed to benefit 200 low-income families with a monthly payment of $725, but delays disrupted the schedule. Now, the California Department of Social Services has announced new dates, and eligible families can reapply for assistance starting April 14, 2025.
What Is the FFESP?
The Families First Economic Support Pilot Program was created to help legal guardians caring for children aged 0 to 5 years in certain Sacramento ZIP codes. The main goals are to:
- Improve children’s well-being
- Prevent child welfare involvement
- Provide economic support to families in need
Households must live below 200% of the federal poverty level to qualify for this support.
Who Qualifies for FFESP?
To qualify for the program, applicants must:
- Be legal guardians of children aged 0 to 5 years
- Live in one of the six eligible ZIP codes:
95815, 95821, 95823, 95825, 95828, and 95838 - Have a household income below 200% of the federal poverty line
Initially, 200 families were selected through a lottery system that closed on October 13, 2024. However, due to delays, a new application period has been announced.

When Will the Payments Be Made?
The first round of FFESP payments is expected to be disbursed in mid-June 2025. Payments will be distributed in four instalments through November 2025.
Each qualifying family will receive $725 per month, giving much-needed support during a critical time in the child’s early development.
Why Is the FFESP Important?
This pilot program provides direct cash aid to families raising young children in economically disadvantaged communities. It’s part of a broader effort to:
- Reduce child poverty
- Keep families together
- Ease financial strain on caregivers
By focusing on families most at risk, Sacramento County aims to create a model that could be replicated in other areas of California and the United States.
