Government institutions have adapted to society’s current demands and trends, particularly in terms of digital media, so it is becoming more common to be able to conduct various administrative procedures via the internet, rather than having to physically visit an office.
This process has streamlined the bureaucracy of the United States’ Social Security system while also providing increased convenience to citizens.
As a result, if a Social Security card needs to be renewed due to expiration or loss, the process can now be completed online.
However, if a person loses their card, they may not require a replacement. In most cases, simply knowing your Social Security number (SSN) will suffice; however, if you require a replacement, you can apply online or in person.
Renewing the SSA card online
When renewing your Social Security card online, visit the official website of the Social Security Administration of the United States.
At this address, you will be asked a series of questions to determine the best way to apply for your replacement card. In most states, citizens can apply for a replacement card using their personal my Social Security account, making the process more efficient.
If you are unable to do so, you can still begin your application online and schedule an appointment to complete it at your nearest Social Security office or Card Center.

If you are unable to complete the online application using my Social Security, you must submit the necessary documents in person. You must provide various documents depending on your citizenship and the type of card you are applying for.
If you do not begin the application process online, you will need to fill out a printed Application for a Social Security Card (form SS-5) and bring the required documents to your local Social Security office or Card Center. To save time, you can download, print, and complete Form SS-5 before you arrive.
Delay time to get the SSA card
According to the US Public Administration, “we will send your Social Security card as soon as we have all of the necessary information”. In general, the delay ranges between 7 and 10 working days from the date your application was processed.
However, there are minor delays in processing applications for Social Security cards sent by mail, so it may take 2 to 4 weeks to process an application and return the supporting documents.
Finally, if you apply for a new or replacement card using form I-795 and/or form I-485, “we will issue your card within 7 to 10 days after the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has approved your employment authorization or your application for permanent residence,” the Administration claims.
