A 62-year-old woman, Suzanne Cherry, lost her life in a tragic accident after being hit by a van fleeing police while she was playing golf at Aston Wood Golf Club in Kingstanding, Birmingham.
Her heartbroken husband, who witnessed the incident, said he watched in “helpless horror” as the van mounted an embankment and struck his wife during what should have been a peaceful morning.
What Happened?
The incident took place at 10:25 a.m. on 11 April. Two West Midlands Police patrol cars had started chasing a grey Nissan van after reports of suspicious activity.
Police officers stopped the chase when the van left the road and entered the golf course, but moments later, it hit Ms. Cherry, who was walking with her husband on the course.
She was taken to a hospital, but sadly died due to her injuries.
Emotional Statement From Her Husband
In a statement shared through West Midlands Police, her husband described the heartbreaking moment:
“While enjoying what should have been the safest of Suzanne’s many activities, I watched in helpless horror as the life of my beautiful wife and our future together was snatched away in an instant.”
He said Suzanne had an “infectious zest for life,” and was always supportive and loving to everyone around her.
“She was unselfish, always ready to encourage with love and support those around her to achieve more than they themselves thought possible,” he added.
A Devoted Mother, Step-Mother and Friend
Suzanne Cherry was from Aldridge, Walsall. She is survived by her mother Maureen, three adult children, and two stepchildren. She was loved by her family, colleagues, and friends from her work, sports, and social activities.
“Sue was loved and will be painfully missed by her entire family and friends,” her husband said.
The family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.
Neighbours and Friends Pay Tribute
Neighbours in her community called the tragedy “appalling” and shared their sadness.
One resident said:
“She was playing golf with her husband. He saw it all happen and is a broken man.”
Another neighbour added:
“Going to play the game you love on a beautiful day and then that happens. It is beyond comprehension.”
