U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance visited the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland on Friday as part of a national security mission, marking his growing focus on America’s strategic presence in the Arctic region. Speaking to U.S. service members stationed there, Vance admitted that even he didn’t fully realize the importance of their work until recently.
“I Learned a Lot Today”: Vance Acknowledges Critical Role of Arctic Base
During his visit, Vance told the troops:
“You can read about it in a book, but I saw it up close and personal. What you guys do is so critically important.”
The Pituffik Space Base, located in Greenland—a self-governing territory under the Kingdom of Denmark—plays a key role in early missile detection and Arctic security. Vance said that in the case of an enemy missile or submarine attack, it is the people at this base who would likely be the first to detect the threat and alert U.S. forces further south.
He addressed “fellow Americans” and explained:
“If a missile was fired from an enemy country or submarine into the United States, it is the people here who would provide the early warning to protect the rest of the country.”
Trump Repeats Call to Acquire Greenland
Vance’s visit came just days after President Donald Trump again publicly stated that Greenland must be acquired by the U.S. for reasons of national security.
“We need Greenland for international safety and security. We need it. We have to have it,” Trump said in a recent interview.
Though Greenland is not currently for sale, Trump has long pushed the idea of bringing it under U.S. control to ensure America’s strategic leadership in the Arctic.
Vance Highlights Growing Threats in Arctic Region
Vance warned that Russia, China, and other nations are becoming increasingly active in the Arctic, especially in areas like naval routes, mineral access, and military positioning.
“We need to ensure that America is leading in the Arctic. If we don’t, other nations will fill that gap.”
The Arctic is becoming more important as melting ice opens new sea routes and uncovers valuable natural resources, making it a focus for global powers.
Cultural Visit for Vance’s Wife Canceled
Vance’s wife was also scheduled to accompany him for a cultural trip around Greenland. However, according to USA Today, her visit was canceled after local leaders reportedly declined to meet her.
