Iconic Houston Mattress Mack Store to Close Soon

In a surprising announcement, Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, a beloved figure in Houston, revealed that he is closing down the Post Oak location of Gallery Furniture. Known for his energetic personality, generous community work, and love of sports betting, Mattress Mack has been a part of Houston’s heart for decades.

He broke the news on April 2nd through a Facebook post, where he also announced a huge closing sale with furniture marked down up to 70% at the Post Oak showroom.

Why the Post Oak Gallery Furniture Is Closing

The Post Oak location, though iconic, was actually the smallest of Gallery Furniture’s three stores, taking up about 30,000 square feet. Mattress Mack had previously hinted at closing it back in 2019, when road construction near the area caused a serious drop in customer traffic.

“The traffic went down by half because they tore up the road,” Mack said in a past interview.

That traffic hit, along with recent health issues, may have played a part in the final decision.

Health Challenges for Mattress Mack

The last year has been tough for Mattress Mack. He suffered from a serious infection and later had to undergo open-heart surgery, both of which took a toll on his health. In one frightening moment last fall, he vomited in the parking lot of the store and couldn’t speak clearly — symptoms that later led to a bacterial infection diagnosis.

These health issues may have influenced his decision to slow down and focus on his well-being.

What’s Next for Gallery Furniture?

Even though the Post Oak showroom is closing, Gallery Furniture is not shutting down completely. The brand still operates its other two locations, which continue to serve customers in the Houston area.

Fans can also expect to still see Mattress Mack doing what he loves — filming fun commercials and placing big bets on Texas sports teams.
