In a Recent Interview, Trump Says He is Unsure if He Supports Due Process Rights

President Donald Trump made headlines again in a wide-ranging interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press”, taped at his Mar-a-Lago estate and aired on Sunday. The Republican president, now in his second term, addressed topics from immigration and Canada to TikTok, cryptocurrency, and even third-term speculation. Here are the main highlights.

Trump Uncertain on Due Process for All

When asked whether due process rights apply equally to both citizens and noncitizens under the U.S. Constitution, Trump appeared unsure.

“I don’t know. I’m not, I’m not a lawyer. I don’t know,” he said.

Critics say this stance undermines the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, which guarantee fair treatment under U.S. law. The issue gained attention after Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran man mistakenly deported from Maryland, remained imprisoned in El Salvador despite a Supreme Court order demanding his return.

Trump defended his immigration crackdown, claiming:

“I was elected to get them the hell out of here, and the courts are holding me from doing it.”

Making Canada the 51st State?

Trump has previously joked about making Canada the 51st U.S. state, a comment that angered Canadian officials. But in the NBC interview, he downplayed the seriousness of military involvement:

“Highly unlikely,” he said when asked if force would be needed.

On Greenland, however, Trump was less clear:

“Something could happen with Greenland… we need that for national and international security.”

Recession Warnings? Trump Disagrees

Despite a 0.3% economic decline in the first quarter of 2025 and Wall Street’s growing concerns, Trump insisted the U.S. is in a “transition” and the economy will do “fantastically.”

“Some people say it’s the best economy ever,” he claimed, dismissing recession fears.

He blamed the negative numbers on his predecessor, Joe Biden:

“The good parts are the Trump economy. The bad parts are the Biden economy.”

Trump Talks Tariffs and Toys

Trump defended his tariff policies, which critics say could lead to supply shortages. He rejected the idea that families would suffer, saying:

“They don’t need 30 dolls. They can have three. They don’t need 250 pencils. They can have five.”

Trump Responds to Third-Term Rumours

Despite the 22nd Amendment banning a third presidential term, Trump has floated the idea multiple times.

In this interview, he said:

“There is support for it… But this is not something I’m looking to do.”

He added he hopes to pass leadership to another “great Republican,” mentioning Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as top names but said it’s “too early” to decide.

Rubio, Hegseth & Miller: Key Roles in Focus

Trump said:

  • JD Vance is doing a “fantastic job” as Vice President
  • Marco Rubio is “great” and is temporarily filling in as acting national security adviser
  • Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is “totally safe” in his job, despite criticism

Trump also praised Stephen Miller but ruled him out for the UN ambassador post:

“That would be a downgrade… Stephen is much higher on the totem pole.”

Trump Denies Profiting from Presidency

Despite promoting cryptocurrencies, branded products, and Truth Social, Trump denied personal profit from his presidency:

“I’m not profiting from anything… I donate my salary. I think maybe only George Washington did that.”

He said his crypto ventures—like a meme coin and World Liberty Financial—were started before the election and are necessary to keep up with countries like China.

TikTok Deal Could Be Extended Again

Trump confirmed he may extend the deadline for TikTok to find a U.S.-based buyer, saying:

“I have a little warm spot in my heart for TikTok.”

While negotiations were nearly complete, tariffs against China slowed things down. Still, Trump believes a deal is close and beneficial for both the U.S. and China:

“We actually have a deal… It’ll be a good thing for both countries.”
