In a tragic and shocking incident, a 41-year-old man named Alvin Francis was fatally stabbed during a seat dispute on an MTA shuttle bus in Brooklyn on May 11, 2025. The violence happened in broad daylight, around 2 p.m., while Francis was on his way home to celebrate Mother’s Day with his family.
What Led to the Attack?
Francis, a Queens resident, was travelling on the J90 shuttle bus, which replaces the J train on weekends. According to police reports and surveillance footage, the argument began when 36-year-old Kareem McCalla boarded the bus through the rear door and asked Francis to move his backpack so he could sit down.
Even after the bag was moved, McCalla was not satisfied with the space. Witnesses say he threatened to stab Francis, then grabbed his chain and stabbed him multiple times as Francis tried to get away.
Francis was immediately rushed to Brookdale University Hospital, but sadly, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
The NYPD launched a manhunt following the attack, releasing footage of the suspect. The video showed a man wearing a light grey hoodie, blue cap, backpack, and a cross necklace.
Just three days later, on May 14, Kareem McCalla of Richmond Hill turned himself in and was arrested. He has been charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. He is currently being held without bail.
Family Devastated by the Sudden Loss
Francis’s wife, Todman-Francis, recalled that the couple had spoken on the phone earlier that day to make plans for Mother’s Day dinner. He had told her, “See you when I get home.” When he didn’t arrive, she tracked his phone and found it had been at a police precinct. That’s when she learned about the tragedy.
The couple had been together for over 20 years and were married for five years, planning a vow renewal ceremony in August. His death has left his family and the community heartbroken.
A neighbour in South Jamaica, Queens, said, “Everybody’s saddened by it. He was a family man, hardworking, and known in the neighbourhood. It’s tough for everyone.”
Official Statement from the Family
In an official statement released on May 12, the grieving family described Francis as “a loving and dedicated father, husband, and brother.” They requested privacy during this difficult time and added:
“We are placing our full trust in law enforcement as they continue their investigation, and we remain hopeful that justice will be served.”
