Five years ago, the world of country music lost a legend. On March 29, 2020, Joe Diffie—one of the most loved voices of the 1990s—passed away from COVID-19. As this Saturday (March 29) marks the fifth anniversary of his death, his son Parker Diffie shared a touching message on social media to honour his father’s memory and legacy.
Remembering Joe Diffie: A Country Legend
Joe Diffie was known for hit songs like “Pickup Man,” “Home,” “Third Rock From the Sun” and many more. With his heartfelt lyrics, classic country charm, and powerful voice, he became one of the biggest names in ’90s country music. Sadly, he passed away just two days after announcing he tested positive for COVID-19 in March 2020. He was only 61.
His sudden death shocked not just fans, but the entire music industry. Joe was the first major country music artist to die due to the pandemic. His loss was later followed by other beloved artists like John Prine, Charley Pride, and Bill Mack.
A Son’s Heartfelt Letter to His Father
Parker Diffie, Joe’s son, posted a moving letter on social media along with a childhood picture of the two. In his message, Parker shared how much he still misses his father and how he’s doing everything he can to carry forward his legacy.
“Today marks five years since you left us, and the weight of that time feels both heavy and fleeting,” Parker begins.
He spoke about how he finds comfort in his father’s music, laughter, and memories. He said that his father’s voice still feels close, offering love and guidance even in his absence.
Parker also promised that he would continue keeping his father’s music alive. “Every time I see a fan light up when they hear one of your hits, it’s like you’re right there with me,” he wrote.
Carrying the Legacy Forward
Joe Diffie wasn’t just a country star—he was a loving father, mentor, and friend. Parker’s emotional tribute showed how deeply his father’s life and values continue to guide him. He ended the note with a promise to make his father proud:
