Sadly, he passed away just two days after announcing he tested positive for COVID-19 in March 2020. He was only 61.
His sudden death shocked not just fans, but the entire music industry. Joe was the first major country music artist to die due to the pandemic. His loss was later followed by other beloved artists like John Prine, Charley Pride, and Bill Mack.
