Kid Rock isn’t holding back when it comes to the details of his recent vasectomy. The 54-year-old singer, who is already a father to one adult son, Robert James Ritchie, Jr., shared the unexpected—and often hilarious—experience during a candid conversation on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast.
Fresh off the end of his engagement to Audrey Berry, Kid Rock made the decision to undergo the procedure. However, as he quickly learned, the reality of a vasectomy was not quite what he initially thought.
Kid Rock’s Misconception About Vasectomy Surgery
Before diving into the process, Kid Rock admitted he had little knowledge of what a vasectomy actually entailed.
“I’m like, ‘Alright, I gotta get these things cut off, or whatever they do,'” he recounted, adding that he initially believed the surgery involved removing his testicles.
After consulting with other men who had undergone the procedure, he was reassured that wasn’t the case. According to the Mayo Clinic, a vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure that cuts and seals the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm.
The Most Awkward Part of the Procedure
While many assume the worst part of a vasectomy is the surgery itself, Kid Rock said his most uncomfortable moment actually came before the procedure even started—during the preparation process.
“Now here’s the f–ked up part, Bill,” Rock explained. “You’re sitting there, and there’s a dude washing your balls. Now think about this: Someone starts scratching your back and you don’t know who it is—it feels good.”
He admitted he was doing everything in his power to keep his mind off the situation.
“I’m [thinking about] like, f–king baseball. Who hit the most home runs in history?'” he joked. “‘If I f–king pop a b–er right now, am I gay? This is f–ked up.'”
The Doctor’s Unbelievably Ironic Name
As if the situation couldn’t get any funnier, Kid Rock said he was already laughing when the doctor introduced himself.
“You know what the doctor’s name was? I’m not making this up. Dr. Johnson. No s–t,” Rock revealed.
The moment felt too on-the-nose to be real, but he swears it was true.

Before beginning the procedure, Rock’s doctor tried to create a relaxing atmosphere by offering to play music. But his song choice wasn’t exactly what you’d expect for a calming environment.
“I’m on the table, he goes, ‘What kind of music you want to listen to? Anything that keeps you calm?'” Rock recalled. “Motherf–ker puts on Metallica.”
While Metallica’s high-energy sound isn’t the most typical choice for surgery, Kid Rock seemed to take it all in stride—laughing through the entire experience.
