Even though the federal stimulus checks have ended in the United States, some individual states are still offering financial help to support residents who are struggling.
In May 2025, a few states are continuing with state-level stimulus checks or refunds aimed at helping low-income families, senior citizens, and vulnerable communities.
State-by-State Stimulus Checks in May 2025
Each state has its own rules for who can get this money. The payment amounts and eligibility requirements are also different in every state. Let’s look at a few of the most active programs in May.
California – Sacramento Family First
This program gives $725 per month to families with young children (aged 0 to 5). It is available only in certain parts of Sacramento, Fresno, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles. You must:
- Live in eligible ZIP codes
- Meet the income limit
- Have a child aged 0–5
The goal is to help families cover rising living costs and offer better stability to households with small children.
Colorado – TABOR Refund
In Colorado, if you filed your 2024 state tax return, you could receive a TABOR refund of:
- $800 for individuals
- $1,600 for joint filers
No application is needed. Payments are being made between March and June 2025. Make sure your tax return was submitted correctly and on time.

Alaska – Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD)
Alaska gives money to residents through its Permanent Fund Dividend, which is funded by oil profits. In 2025, the amount is $1,702.
To qualify:
- You must have lived in Alaska for at least 1 year
- You cannot have been outside the state for more than 180 days
This is a once-a-year payment that helps many residents with basic expenses, especially during the colder months.
Pennsylvania – Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program
This program is for seniors aged 65 and older, widows/widowers aged 50+, and people with disabilities aged 18+. You can get up to $800 back, depending on your income and housing costs.
Income limits are:
- $35,000/year for homeowners
- $15,000/year for renters
Applications can be made online or using a paper form. This is very helpful for older adults who spend a large part of their income on rent or property tax.
What If Your State Is Not Offering a Stimulus Check?
If your state is not listed here, it doesn’t mean you’re out of options. Some states provide other types of support, like:
- Tax refunds
- Energy bill subsidies
- Local city or county rebates
Here’s what you should do to find out if you qualify for anything:
- Check your state’s Department of Revenue website
- Visit your local social services office
- Look at your state tax return for refund eligibility
Many people miss out on state stimulus money simply because they don’t know it exists. Staying informed can help you get financial support that you’re entitled to—sometimes without even applying.
