Former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney has raised strong concerns about what another Donald Trump presidency could look like. Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, she warned Americans to “carefully consider” the risk Trump poses to the country’s democratic values, legal system, and international standing.
Once a vocal critic of Kamala Harris, Cheney now says she supports her over Trump, citing the former president’s repeated attacks on democracy and obsession with power.
Trump Thinks He’s “Above the Law,” Says Cheney
Cheney stressed that Trump believes he can’t be held responsible for anything he does once he’s president again. She referred to a Supreme Court ruling that said presidents are immune from criminal prosecution for official acts, calling it a serious threat.
“Trump will not respect court rulings,” Cheney said. “If a president refuses to follow the law, we stop being a nation of laws.”
Dangerous Allies and Foreign Policy Concerns
Cheney said that Trump’s admiration for authoritarian leaders and his “erratic and chaotic” foreign policy make him unfit to lead again. She warned that Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance, support isolationist policies and are not trustworthy in international matters.
She added that Trump “idolizes tyrants” and criticized his lack of support for U.S. allies like Ukraine, which is currently fighting a war against Russia.
Trump’s Actions on Jan. 6 and Other “Cruel” Behavior
Cheney also discussed Trump’s behavior during the January 6 Capitol riot, calling it “fundamentally cruel.” She said Trump watched as violence unfolded and failed to stop it. She compared this to Trump’s more recent false claims that the Biden administration blocked hurricane relief to certain areas.
“That kind of cruelty makes someone unfit to serve,” Cheney said.
Cheney Defends Supporting Harris After Past Criticism
In 2020, Cheney had called Kamala Harris a “radical liberal,” but now she supports her as a more stable and trustworthy choice over Trump. She explained that while she still disagrees with Harris on many policies, Harris has a “sincere heart” and has served the public with dedication.
She believes that defeating Trump is more important than party politics right now.
Cheney Criticizes House Speaker Mike Johnson
Cheney also criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson, who claimed on the same program that the 2020 election ended with a “peaceful transfer of power.” She pointed to the violent Capitol attack as proof that the transition was anything but peaceful.
She accused Johnson of saying things just to please Trump, calling his actions dangerous and politically motivated.
