Louis DeJoy, the head of the United States Postal Service (USPS), has announced that he will step down from his position. This decision marks the end of a controversial and eventful term that saw major changes in the country’s mail system.
DeJoy Steps Down, Deputy to Take Over for Now
DeJoy confirmed his plan to retire in a statement released Monday evening. Until a new Postmaster General is chosen, Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino will temporarily take charge of USPS operations.
In his statement, DeJoy said he believes the postal service is strong and well-prepared to continue its transformation and modernization work, which began during his leadership.
Search for a New Leader Begins
Last month, DeJoy sent a letter to the USPS Board of Governors asking them to start looking for his replacement. The board will now carry out the search for the next permanent Postmaster General.
Controversy and Changes During His Term
DeJoy was appointed during the COVID-19 pandemic and became a central figure in major national discussions, especially about mail-in voting during elections. In 2021, he introduced a 10-year plan to improve USPS finances. The plan included closing some mail-processing centers and changing delivery systems.
Supporters said these steps were needed to reduce costs, but critics argued the changes led to slower mail service, especially in rural areas.
Elon Musk’s DOGE Team and Government Involvement
Recently, DeJoy agreed to let the DOGE team—linked to billionaire Elon Musk—help find ways to improve efficiency at the postal service. This move raised eyebrows and added more attention to his final days in office.
Adding to the controversy, former President Donald Trump suggested the USPS should come under the control of the Commerce Department, which is part of the White House. Legal experts say this could break the law, as USPS is meant to be independent, according to the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970.
Talks of Privatization Stir Protests
Trump has also expressed support for privatizing USPS. This has caused concern and protests by postal worker unions across the country. They believe such a move could hurt public service and lead to job losses.
