A 32-year-old man is facing a second-degree murder charge after allegedly leaving his 21-month-old daughter inside a hot car for more than nine hours, leading to her death.
Joseph Boatman was arrested after his daughter was found unresponsive in a car on June 8, 2024. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene shortly before noon after a family member discovered the child.
The Tragic Incident
According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, Boatman had picked up his daughter from a relative’s house around 2:30 a.m. on June 8. After placing her in the car seat, Boatman went back inside the house but never returned to the vehicle.
Officials later learned that Boatman had consumed multiple alcoholic beverages before picking up his daughter, which may have contributed to his lapse in judgment.
The child was left in the vehicle for more than nine hours, during which time the temperature inside the car likely reached dangerous levels. The heat index that day exceeded 100 degrees, making it a potentially fatal situation for a young child left inside an unattended car for an extended period.
