In a shocking case of domestic violence in Indiana, C. Gray, a 46-year-old man, is now facing two counts of attempted murder along with several other felony charges after allegedly carrying out a violent campaign against his estranged wife. The terrifying events culminated in a shooting that left the woman injured and fearing for her life.
Escalating Violence and Harassment
According to police reports and court records, Gray had been harassing his estranged wife for months following their separation. He repeatedly showed up at her workplace, where he would threaten her life, telling her on multiple occasions that he was going to kill her.
In one frightening incident, Gray allegedly attempted to run her over with his vehicle while she was outside her workplace. However, this was not the last of his aggression.
The Shooting Incident
The situation escalated the following day when Gray broke into his wife’s home by climbing through a window. Once inside, he allegedly snuck upstairs to find his estranged wife and opened fire, shooting five times. One of the bullets struck the woman in the leg. During the shooting, Gray also threatened to kill her current boyfriend, who was present in the home at the time.
Thankfully, the woman survived the attack, and first responders were able to provide medical assistance. She later gave a detailed account of the incident, revealing a timeline of repeated threats, harassment, and ultimately, an attempt on her life.
Charges and Criminal History
In addition to the attempted murder charges, Gray now faces charges of burglary, intimidation, battery with a deadly weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
His criminal history is extensive, dating back to 2003, with a notable 2005 arrest for domestic battery. Gray also has an open case for reckless homicide stemming from a 2020 incident, adding even more gravity to his legal troubles.
Court Appearance and Bail Conditions
Gray appeared in court on Thursday, where the judge set a $200,000 surety bond. The judge also issued a no-contact order, prohibiting him from having any communication with his estranged wife or her current partner.
If he posts bail, he will be required to wear a GPS monitor, remain on home detention, and adhere strictly to the conditions of his release. His next court date is scheduled for June 11.
Domestic Violence Awareness
Advocates for domestic violence survivors have emphasized the gravity of this case, calling it a disturbing example of how dangerous the period following a separation can be for victims. Domestic violence awareness advocates stress the importance of those in abusive relationships seeking help and developing a safety plan.
Gray’s repeated threats, stalking behavior, and his violent actions over two consecutive days paint a chilling picture of a man desperate to control and harm the woman who left him. His violent reaction to rejection underscores how domestic violence can escalate to life-threatening levels if not taken seriously.
The Victim’s Resilience
As Gray awaits further legal proceedings, his estranged wife continues to recover both physically and emotionally from the trauma. Her quick thinking and resilience likely saved her life and could play a key role in ensuring that her former partner is held accountable for his actions in the courtroom.
