In May 2025, many people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in the United States will notice something unusual — they’ll get two payments in one month instead of the usual one. While this may sound like a bonus, it’s actually not extra money. It’s just a change in the payment schedule due to how the dates fall on the calendar.
What Is SSI and How Does It Work?
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a monthly financial help given by the U.S. government. It’s designed to support older adults, people with disabilities, and those who have very low income and few financial resources. Unlike Social Security retirement benefits, SSI is based on financial need, not on work history.
Normally, SSI payments are sent out on the first day of each month. But if that day falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment is moved to the last working day before that date. This system helps make sure people don’t face delays in receiving their money.
Why There Are Two SSI Payments in May 2025
In May 2025, SSI recipients will see two payments. The first was sent on May 1, like usual. The second will arrive on Friday, May 30. But here’s the catch — that second payment is not for May. It’s actually the June payment, sent early because June 1 falls on a Sunday.
Since the Social Security Administration (SSA) doesn’t issue payments on weekends, they’re moving the June check forward to the last business day of May. So even though it seems like a bonus, it’s really just an early deposit.
What This Means for June 2025
Because the June payment is coming early, there will be no SSI deposit in June. The money you receive at the end of May is meant to cover your June expenses. It’s important to budget accordingly, so you don’t run out of money before your next payment in July.

Who Will Get Both Payments?
To get both SSI payments in May, you need to be an active recipient in both May and June. Also, you must meet the usual SSI requirements:
- You must have little or no income.
- Your total resources (like savings and assets) must be below $2,000 for individuals or $3,000 for couples.
- You must be a U.S. citizen or have an approved immigration status.
- You must keep your information updated and respond to reviews from the SSA.
If you meet all these conditions and haven’t had your payments paused, you’ll get both deposits automatically. There’s no need to apply or ask for anything extra.
How Much Will You Get?
The maximum SSI payment in 2025 is $967 per month for single people and $1,450 for couples. These amounts include the cost-of-living increase that was added in January. However, your actual payment may be less if you receive other income or financial help.
What to Do If Your Payment Is Missing
If you were expecting one of these payments and didn’t get it, first check your bank account or Direct Express card. If it’s not there, you can log into your my Social Security account or contact the SSA to see what’s going on.
