Methodist Church Gifted a Permanent Home to the Local Boy Scout Troop

After months of uncertainty, Boy Scout Troop 1, the oldest scouting troop in the Wichita Falls area, has received great news—they now officially own the building they’ve called home for nearly 40 years.

Thanks to a generous donation from First United Methodist and University United Methodist, the troop will continue to meet at their longtime location, which was previously owned by Floral Heights Methodist Church.

A Historic Troop Finds Stability

Since 1978, Troop 1 has held its meetings at the Floral Heights Methodist Church building. However, after the church closed in 2024, the future of the troop’s meeting place was uncertain.

With this donation and transfer of ownership, the troop now has a permanent home, allowing them to preserve tradition and continue growing.

For Scoutmaster John Cook, who was once a Scout in Troop 1 himself, this donation means future generations will experience the same sense of community and tradition that shaped his youth.

“We have our Eagle Scout wall back there,” Cook explained. “So, we have generations, families who come in and, you know, the dad will be up there, and then his sons will join the troop. Several generations of families on the wall. And so, it’s that tradition that people like, and with that stability, that tradition can continue.”

Church Leaders Speak on the Importance of Giving Back

Reverends John McLarty and Zack Landis released a joint statement on behalf of First United Methodist and University United Methodist, emphasizing the impact of their contribution:

“By ensuring Troop 1 remains anchored in Floral Heights, we are not only preserving history, but also fostering growth, stability, and opportunity for the next generation.”

Deed Presentation Ceremony Set for March 4

The official deed transfer will take place during Troop 1’s weekly meeting on March 4, where Reverends McLarty and Landis will formally present the troop with ownership of the building.

This moment marks a new chapter for Troop 1, ensuring that its rich history and scouting legacy in Wichita Falls continues for years to come.
