Mexican Mafia Gang Member Arrested After High-Speed Chase in Texas

In a dramatic incident in South Texas, a Mexican Mafia gang member led police on a dangerous chase while trying to transport migrants illegally across the border. The chase ended with multiple arrests and serious charges against the driver.

How the Chase Began

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the case started on April 14, 2025, when a red Dodge Ram was spotted speeding on Interstate 35 in Webb County.

Troopers tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over, sparking a high-speed pursuit along the busy highway.

The Driver Crashed and Tried to Escape on Foot

The situation escalated when the driver crashed through a ranch fence and abandoned the vehicle.
He then tried to escape by running through private property.

With the help of U.S. Border Patrol agents, troopers tracked down and arrested the driver a short time later.

He was identified as John Henry Romero, a known member of the Mexican Mafia gang from Rio Bravo, Mexico.

What Charges Is Romero Facing?

Romero now faces a long list of serious criminal charges, including:

  • Three counts of smuggling of persons (felony)
  • One count of smuggling a person under 18 years old (felony)
  • Evading arrest with a vehicle (felony)

In addition to these felonies, Romero is also charged with:

  • Evading arrest on foot (misdemeanor)
  • Reckless driving (misdemeanor)
  • Criminal mischief (misdemeanor)

These charges could result in lengthy prison time if he is convicted.

What Happened to the Migrants?

Border Patrol agents continued searching the area and managed to track down four migrants from Mexico, including a 15-year-old boy.

The migrants were safely taken into Border Patrol custody and are now going through the immigration process.
