Hawthorne, CA – A 34-year-old mother, Ida Brockman, and her 33-year-old boyfriend, Malachi Whalen, were recently convicted for the abuse, torture, and murder of Brockman’s 7-year-old daughter, A’Miya D., several years ago.
On July 2, a Los Angeles County jury found both defendants guilty of the torture and murder of A’Miya. Brockman was also convicted of child abuse causing death, while Whalen was found guilty of assault on a child causing death. They are set to be sentenced in September.
The Brutal Crime
Prosecutors say that on September 9, 2021, Brockman and Whalen brutally tortured, beat, and ultimately killed A’Miya at their home in Hawthorne. Initially, they tried to blame A’Miya’s biological father for the crime, but Brockman later confessed to pinning the blame on him.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner revealed that the young girl had suffered over 58 individual injuries, including severe burns, blunt force trauma, multiple fractured ribs, a collapsed lung, and other serious internal injuries.

District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed the horror of the case in a statement, saying, “This was a case that shook us all to our core.
The brutal murder of A’Miya, a defenseless 7-year-old girl, at the hands of her own mother and her mother’s boyfriend is nothing short of horrific. We are grateful that the jury returned a guilty verdict and held both defendants accountable for their cruelty.”
