Montague County Cowboy Church holding 5th annual Open Rodeo Memorial Day Weekend

MONTAGUE (KFDX/KJTL) — This Memorial Day weekend, why not celebrate with a classic open rodeo? Even better, it’s free.

The Open Rodeo starts at 7:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25, at the Montague County Cowboy Church Arena at 1600 FM 455.

Make sure you arrive early to enter your little ones into the nightly Calf Scramble and Mutton Bustin’ events that start at 7 p.m. The winners of the Calf Scramble each night will walk away with a new bicycle.

Admission to the rodeo is completely free.

A chuckwagon crew will be set up and preparing a Dutch oven cobbler and homemade ice cream that is complimentary for attendees. Calf fries and catfish are also on the menu.

There will be tributes to past and present military personnel at the rodeo ahead of Memorial Day.

“It’s just a family-oriented event; I think that’s what I like about it the most,” Pastor Joe Caballero said about the rodeo.

You can enter ahead of time for certain events, such as ranch saddle bronc, tie-down roping, breakaway, double mugging and bull riding. Call (580) 276-7151 to enter.

You don’t need to get signed up until the night of for other rodeo events, such as team roping, junior barrels and open barrels.

There is a jackpot each night with $500 added to each event, and the money goes to the aggregate winner of the events after Saturday night.

Following the rodeo on Saturday, there will also be a dance and live band.
