Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments are being rolled out this week to millions of eligible disabled workers in the United States. These benefits are meant to support those who are no longer able to work due to long-term disability. The timing of the payments depends on the date the person started receiving benefits and their birthday.
SSDI Payments for May 2025: Who Gets Paid When?
If you started receiving SSDI benefits after May 1997, your payment is sent out on one of three Wednesdays of each month. Which Wednesday depends on the day you were born.
Here’s how it works for May 2025:
- If your birthday is between the 11th and 20th, your payment is sent on Wednesday, May 21.
- If your birthday falls between the 21st and 31st, your money arrives on Wednesday, May 28.
- The payment process starts from 12:01 a.m. on the scheduled date.
People who were born between the 1st and 10th would have already received their May payment on Wednesday, May 14.
Special Cases: Different Payment Dates
There are a few exceptions to the usual payment schedule. Some SSDI beneficiaries receive their payments earlier:
- If you started getting SSDI before May 1997
- If you live outside the United States
- If you receive both SSDI and Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- If your Medicare premiums are paid by the state
These individuals get their money on the 3rd of each month. However, for May 2025, the 3rd was a Saturday, so the payment was made on Friday, May 2 instead.
Also, for SSI beneficiaries, the June payment was moved up to Friday, May 30, because June 1 falls on a Sunday. This ensures that no one faces delays in receiving their much-needed benefits.

How SSDI Payment Amounts Are Calculated
The amount you receive from SSDI depends on your work history and how much you earned over the years. The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses your highest-earning 35 years, adjusted for inflation, to calculate your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA).
This amount is also adjusted every year to keep up with inflation using a formula called the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA).
SSDI Benefit Amounts for 2025
Due to a 2.5% COLA increase in 2025, the average SSDI payment has gone up. Here’s what beneficiaries can expect:
- Average monthly SSDI payment: $1,580
- Maximum monthly SSDI payment: $4,018 (for those with high lifetime earnings)
To get the maximum amount, you must have earned the Social Security taxable maximum income for 35 years in a row. In 2025, this amount is $176,100 per year.
However, very few people qualify for the maximum benefit. Most disabled workers have lower earnings histories due to gaps caused by health issues, job loss, or part-time work.
What About SSI Payments in 2025?
For those who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), the benefit is lower but designed to help people with very limited income and resources.
- Maximum monthly SSI for individuals: $967
- Maximum for couples receiving SSI together: $1,450
SSI can be received with SSDI in some cases, especially when SSDI benefits are not high enough to cover basic needs.
