Nacogdoches Shooting: Second Suspect Gets 50 Years

Nacogdoches Shooting Second Suspect Gets 50 Years

The Nacogdoches Police Department has shared an update on a serious crime that occurred in late 2023. According to an official statement posted on their Facebook page, a second suspect involved in a police officer shooting has now been sentenced.

The incident took place on December 29, 2023, when a Nacogdoches police officer was fired upon during a traffic stop at the intersection of South Fredonia Street and South Street. The officer had pulled over a vehicle, and during the stop, the passenger opened fire, shooting multiple times. The officer returned fire but was not seriously injured.

Alexander Rios Sentenced to 50 Years

One of the men involved, Alexander Rios, a 23-year-old resident of Nacogdoches, has pleaded guilty to his role in the shooting. On March 28, 2025, Rios was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the attack.

Rios also admitted his involvement in an unrelated aggravated robbery that occurred earlier on May 12, 2023, near the 2500 block of South Street. That case had remained under investigation until now.

This is now the second conviction related to the 2023 officer-involved shooting, and both convicted suspects have received 50-year sentences.

Third Suspect Still in Custody

So far, Jose Iraheta, 25, is the only person named in connection to the crime who has not yet been convicted. He is being held at the Nacogdoches County Jail, with bond set at nearly $1.4 million.

Based on the charges and convictions, it appears that three people were in the car during the incident. With two of them already sentenced, the third could potentially face a similar punishment if convicted.

Community and Legal Officials Respond

In their official statement, the Nacogdoches Police Department expressed their appreciation for the District Attorney’s Office, thanking them for their hard work in preparing and presenting the case. Their efforts helped lead to the convictions and sentencing of those involved in a very dangerous situation.

The department emphasized the importance of holding violent offenders accountable and highlighted the risks their officers face while performing routine duties such as traffic stops.
