Near-Record High Temperatures Lead Sunday's Weather

Texoma is getting an early taste of summer this weekend, with record-challenging heat expected to sweep across the region on Sunday, April 13. The hot, dry conditions will bring temperatures close to 100 degrees in some towns — something we don’t usually see this early in the year.

South Winds and Low Humidity Drive the Heat

Thanks to strong south winds and low humidity, temperatures will rise quickly on Sunday. Wichita Falls is expected to come very close to its all-time record high of 99°F for April 13, originally set in 1972.

Nearby areas like Altus, Vernon, and Quanah may even hit the 100-degree mark for the first time this year, as heat builds across western and southern parts of Texoma.

Where Will It Be the Hottest?

Forecast models suggest that towns in the western Texoma region will feel the worst of the heat. Daytime highs will likely reach the mid to upper 90s, and for some, triple digits are a real possibility.

Even if your town doesn’t break records, Sunday will feel more like mid-June than mid-April, making outdoor plans uncomfortable during the hottest parts of the day.

A Cold Front Brings Relief

Fortunately, the intense heat won’t stick around for long. A cold front is expected to arrive before sunrise on Monday, bringing with it cooler air and strong north winds.

By Monday afternoon, highs will drop back into the 70s, offering a refreshing change from Sunday’s heat wave. Wind gusts may be strong, especially in open areas, so expect a breezy start to the new week.

Stay Safe in the Heat

Even though it’s still spring, this early spike in temperatures can be dangerous — especially for people working or spending time outdoors. Be sure to:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Take breaks in the shade or indoors
  • Wear light-colored, breathable clothing
  • Avoid outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day
