New COVID-19 Variant NB.1.8.1 Has Arrived in America: What You Need to Know

New COVID-19 Variant NB.1.8.1 Has Arrived in America What You Need to Know

First detected in China in January, scientists expected a new COVID-19 variant to reach the U.S.—and now it has.

According to HuffPost, this new variant, called NB.1.8.1, now makes up about 10% of the global SARS-CoV-2 sequences tested, rising quickly from just 2.5% four weeks ago. The current dominant variant remains LB.8.1.

What Makes NB.1.8.1 Different?

The World Health Organization (WHO) says NB.1.8.1 has several new mutations that help it bind to human cells more easily and quickly. This means it might be better at evading the immune system.

These changes could lead to the virus spreading faster and may reduce how well neutralizing antibodies—which block infection—work against it.

How Worried Should We Be?

Scientists and infectious disease experts are closely studying NB.1.8.1 as it spreads in the U.S. While it’s concerning, symptoms are similar to those caused by other COVID-19 variants.

Common COVID Symptoms with NB.1.8.1

Hallmark symptoms:

  • Persistent dry cough
  • Nasal congestion

Other symptoms:

  • Fatigue and tiredness
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • Achy muscles

The most serious symptom remains difficulty breathing.

What About Vaccines?

It’s too soon to know exactly how well current vaccines protect against NB.1.8.1 because research is still limited. However, experts expect vaccines will still prevent severe illness, even if protection against infection is weaker and short-lived.

What Should You Do If You Get Sick?

If you think you have COVID-19 and are at high risk for severe disease or immunocompromised, it’s important to contact your doctor for advice and care.
