After nearly eight years of planning, fundraising, and construction, the East Side of Wichita Falls now has a brand-new, state-of-the-art Boys & Girls Club facility. The center promises to shape the future of young boys and girls by giving them a safe, educational, and inspiring space to grow.
What began as just an idea back in April 2018 has finally become a reality, and those involved are calling it a major success.
A Dream Eight Years in the Making
Randy Cooper, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club, shared how the journey started when longtime board member Bob brought the idea to the table. He asked the board to “explore the possibility of a new Boys and Girls Club” for the East Side community.
Now, thanks to years of teamwork, dedication, and support, that dream has come true.
The new center at 501 North Rosewood opened its doors with a joyful ribbon-cutting ceremony, where local leaders, community members, and former Club kids gathered to celebrate.
What Makes This Facility Special?
This new East Side facility is unlike any of the other four Boys & Girls Club locations in the area. It offers exciting new features and programs to help develop kids academically, physically, and emotionally.
According to Cooper, the East Side club now includes:
- A fully equipped dance studio, with a professional dance instructor
- A brand-new test kitchen to teach kids about healthy nutrition
- A dedicated teen center for older youth
- A full-size gymnasium
- A creative art studio
- A computer lab to support academic growth and tech skills
Building Better Futures
Cooper said the goal of this facility is to support academic success, healthy lifestyles, and strong character development.
“We want to support the development of academic success. We want to support the development of a healthy lifestyle and good character. And we do this through our facilities,” he said.
The club is open to children ages 6 through 18, and the annual membership is just $12, making it highly accessible for families in the community.
A Heartfelt Dedication to Donna Piper
During the opening event, the new building was dedicated to Donna Piper, the former executive director of the Wichita Falls Housing Authority, who has long been a supporter of the community.
“I tried to do a good job when I was here. I care about the people that are here… I don’t think my name needs to be on the building to have a good community center, but it’s appreciated,” said Piper.
Her dedication to the people of Wichita Falls played a key role in shaping the partnership between the Boys & Girls Club and the Housing Authority, ensuring that future generations will benefit from this facility for decades to come.
