New Fire Chief Will Be Announced by the Wichita Falls City Council

Wichita Falls city councilors are set to appoint a new fire chief during their next scheduled meeting on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, according to the official city council agenda.

The expected appointee is Cody Melton, who has served in the Wichita Falls Fire Department (WFFD) for nearly two decades.

Cody Melton Named Sole Finalist After Internal Search

Earlier this year, the city launched an internal recruitment process to fill the position following the retirement of the previous fire chief. After careful evaluation, Melton was named the sole finalist, making him the top and only candidate for the role.

Melton has been part of the department since 2007 and was promoted to fire marshal in 2020. His educational qualifications include both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in public administration. He also holds certifications as a master firefighter and EMT, highlighting his experience and readiness for leadership.

Chief Donald Hughes Retired After 40 Years of Service

The position became available after Chief Donald Hughes officially retired in February 2025. Hughes served in the department for over 40 years, beginning his career in 1984. Before being appointed as chief, he held the position of assistant chief since 2014.

His retirement marked the end of a long and respected career in public service, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and leadership.

The city council is expected to confirm Cody Melton’s appointment at the April 1 session. If confirmed, Melton will step into the role of fire chief, leading the department and continuing its commitment to public safety in Wichita Falls.
