A local nonprofit in Wichita Falls is working to ensure the legacy of a respected community leader, Ray Gonzalez Jr., is never forgotten. The Mexican American Veterans Association is pushing to rename the southbound US Highway 82 flyover in his honour. With support from local officials, the proposal is moving forward and could soon become a reality.
Honouring Ray Gonzalez Jr.
Ray Gonzalez Jr., who passed away in July 2021, was a trailblazer in the Wichita Falls area. He made history as the first Hispanic elected to the Wichita County Commissioners Court, serving from 2009 to 2016. Gonzalez also served on the Wichita Falls City Council and was appointed as the first-ever Hispanic mayor pro-tem.
Born and raised in Wichita Falls, Gonzalez graduated from Old High and attended Midwestern State University (MSU). He was also a Vietnam War veteran, having served in the U.S. Army, where he earned the Purple Heart Medal for his bravery and service.
Community Support for the Proposal
The proposal to rename the flyover has gained solid backing from key leaders, including former Wichita County Judge Woody Gossom and Wichita Falls Mayor Tim Short. Both have expressed their support for recognizing Gonzalez’s lasting contributions to the community.
What Happens Next?
The Planning and Zoning Commission will hear from the Mexican American Veterans Association on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the MPEC (Multi-Purpose Events Center) in Wichita Falls. If the commission approves the request, it will move forward to the Wichita Falls City Council for final consideration.
This is an important step toward officially naming a part of the city in honour of a man who broke barriers and gave back to his community in many ways.
