Oklahoma and Northern Texas Are Under Freeze Watch as Oklahoma City, Norman, and Wichita Prepare for the Cold

Parts of Oklahoma and northern Texas are bracing for a sharp dip in temperatures, with the National Weather Service in Norman issuing a Freeze Watch for the region. The advisory warns that overnight lows could fall to 29 degrees Fahrenheit, starting late tonight through tomorrow morning.

This sudden chill is a big change from the mild weather experienced just last week, and it’s especially important for gardeners, farmers, and homeowners to take precautions.

Areas Covered by the Freeze Watch

The Freeze Watch includes central, east central, northern, northwest, southeast, southern, southwest, and western Oklahoma, as well as northern Texas. Major cities in the affected area include:

  • Oklahoma City
  • Norman
  • Wichita Falls

Cold Could Damage Plants and Pipes

The National Weather Service (NWS) is urging residents to protect sensitive plants and outdoor plumbing before the freezing temperatures hit.

In a public advisory, NWS stated:

“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation, and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.”

Gardeners should cover plants, move potted plants indoors, and make sure garden hoses are disconnected. Homeowners should consider insulating outdoor faucets to avoid frozen pipes.

Snow, Rain & Frost in the Forecast

The chilly weather will begin with a chance of light snow and rain early this morning — mostly before 7 a.m. Though snow accumulation is expected to stay under half an inch, it marks a quick shift into colder conditions.

Today’s high for Oklahoma City is forecasted at 53 degrees, with clouds giving way to clearing skies. But by tonight, temperatures will plummet again, with patchy frost forming after 4 a.m.

Warmer Days Ahead by Midweek

The good news? This cold snap won’t last long. According to the latest forecast:

  • Tomorrow: Frost expected early, but a sunny day with highs near 65°F
  • Tuesday: Even warmer, with highs around 71°F
  • Wednesday: Spring returns with temperatures near 78°F

So, while tonight may bring a bite of winter, spring-like weather is just around the corner, offering relief to those tired of the temperature swings.
