“Operation Slowdown” aims to reduce speeding, improve driver safety

TEXOMA (KFDX/KJTL) — The Wichita Falls Police Department and the Texas Department of Transportation are teaming up for another round of Operation Slowdown to encourage drivers to travel at safe speeds on Texas roadways.

Burn ban issued in Young County

Operation Slowdown is part of TxDOT’s “Be Safe. Drive Smart” speeding awareness campaign. According to TxDOT, speeding is one of the main causes of wrecks in Texas, as speed increases the distance drivers need to stop before crashing into the vehicle in front of them.

According to the department’s Facebook post, WFPD will increase its patrol to ticket speeding drivers and enforce city speed limits.

The grant the department received from TxDOT allows the department to pay patrol and motor officers for overtime work for increased patrols beginning July 19.

In addition to driving at safe speeds, TxDOT reminds motorists and passengers to buckle up for every ride, adjust speed for wet or slick road conditions, and remember that traffic fines are double in work and school zones.
