Bend, Oregon – Dry lightning and gusty winds are expected to threaten wildfire activity on Tuesday afternoon across Oregon’s central mountains and the southern Deschutes National Forest, prompting a Fire Weather Watch for the region.
Fire Weather Watch Details
The National Weather Service in Pendleton has issued the Fire Weather Watch for 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday, as a dry cold front moves through the area, destabilizing conditions.
Although thunderstorms are expected to be isolated, any lightning strikes could ignite new fires due to the minimal rainfall, with most areas receiving less than a tenth of an inch of rain.
Affected Areas
The Fire Weather Watch covers Fire Weather Zones 700 and 705, which include large portions of Jefferson and Deschutes counties. These areas are particularly vulnerable due to dry conditions and high winds.
Wind and Fire Risks
Winds in the area could gust up to 45 mph, which would accelerate fire spread and make it harder for fire crews to contain any wildfires. With the added threat of dry lightning, the conditions could quickly lead to dangerous and fast-moving fires.
Safety Recommendations
Avoid outdoor burning due to the risk of starting a wildfire.
Secure loose items that could become airborne in strong winds, such as patio furniture, tarps, and debris.
Be prepared with evacuation plans, especially in fire-prone areas.
Fire Crew Readiness
Fire crews in the region are on standby, ready to respond to any fires that may ignite. Authorities also warn that further Red Flag Warnings may be issued if conditions worsen throughout the day.
